Money plant/ Pothos

We have seen this plant very often in every house, multiply beauty and get an ornamental view. It’s scientific name is Epipremnum aureum and is known by many names such as: Pothos, silver vine, devil's ivy and Solomon Islands ivy. Pothos are very helpful in many ways, but at the same time we have to be very careful while handling these. Below are some tips and tricks to grow them efficiently, what benefits they pursue, how these pathos might be harmful and what can be done for prevention.


Tips and tricks for healthy and bushy pathos

  1. Fertilization: Pothos will stay healthy when they get the correct amount of nutrition at the correct time. Regularly providing any kind of compost and weed solution to plants will help them to stay healthy. 

  2. Pothos in water: Many of us clip money plants in the vase of water to enhance its beauty. For this, fertilizer is not required, as it will result in developing the fungus on the roots. However, to maintain the nutrition in the water, we should regularly replace it with tap water once in a couple of days. With this, Pothos will be able to grow efficiently and will be able to get all nutrition.

  3. Keep in sunlight for better growth: The foremost key is to provide sunlight to money plants. Money plants can grow in low light, but to grow them faster and stay healthy, we should place money plants in such a place inside our house from where they are able to get adequate amounts of sunlight.

  4. Watering regularly: The other main component is water. To keep plants hydrated we should always keep watering the plant, but only when we see the soil is drying out. We can check the soil before watering the plant, by touching it and if the soil is sticking, then we can wait for a couple of days. If we see the tips of the leaves turning brown (applies for every plant), then it’s because of the deficiency of water. So, we should regularly water plants as the method told above.

  5. Pruning: This process you can do to make your money plant look bushy. Money plant is one the succulent plants like Jade, cutting the stem from it’s node will result in propagating the other stem sideways.

Benefits Money plant aka Pothos consist

  1. A great air purifier: Along with Dracaena reflexa, Dumb Cane and Snake plant, Pothos are also a great air purifier. Normally, plants take carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during day time at the time of photosynthesis. VOCs (Volatile Organic compounds) such as benzene, ethylene, formaldehyde, Carbon Monoxide, and Xylene etc which pollute the air, harmful for breathing and our body. By placing money plants indoors will decrease the level of such VOCs and will purify air.

  2. A great Anti Radiator: We all must have a lot of electrical devices such as a Refrigerator, Air Conditioner, Laptops, Mobile Phones, WiFi routers etc. These electrical devices emit radiation which may result in many health related problems like headache, anxiety, improper sleep and lack in concentration. Keeping Money plant at homes and offices will work as an anti radiator and will help in focusing on the work, keeps mind calm and stress free. 

  3. Brings Prosperity: Per Vastu and Feng Sui, this plant is considered as the lucky to keep in home and offices. Keeping this plant will get good luck, prosperity, positive energy with respect to both personal and professional spheres. However, there is a particular way to get it’s best results. Below are the ways through which you can attain its great outcomes.

    1. Keep the plant in the South-East corner of the house or keep the plant in the North entrance for financial stability and to get rid of any kind of obstacles. Southeastern discretion is considered as the door for financial stability and prosperity in both Vastu Shasta and Feng Sui.

    2. Avoid keeping this in the North eastern direction of the house and keeping this plant in the kitchen or near the kitchen, as it will invite obstacles, financial crisis and differences in relationships.

    4. Don’t let the plant's leaves touch the ground, as it said that it brings bad luck. To avoid this, one can place it in a hanging vase and try keeping it in a big pot.

    5. Avoid keeping Money plant near red color, because it might get in loss of prosperity and wealth. Rather we can keep money plants in blue or green vase to attract positive energy and block the flow of negative energy.

Why harmful:

In the process of evolution some animals developed resistance for any kind of changes like animal attack, diseases or climatic changes. In the similar manner, some plants also developed such resistance to protect themselves from various challenges and Pothos are one such plant. Along with Pothos Snake Plant, Dumb Cane, Peace lily, English ivy, Philodendron have toxic substances on their leaves or sap.

In Pothos, it’s leaves contain a good quantity of calcium oxalate which is a Crystal. If a person consumes, it can harm the gut of that person, along with vomiting and diarrhea. If a child has consumed its leaves then, we need to immediately remove the leave and then consult the doctor. 


Prevention from Pothos:

There are two ways to get prevention from this pant:

  • Keep this plant in a hanging vase so that it will be hard for your child to reach at such height

  • Keep on a height such as keep them on a unreachable rack and use them as a decorative


These plants increase the beauty of our interior and are a great air purifier. You should not be afraid of these kinds of plants. But for a preventive measure, we can keep them in such a place where they are out of reach.
