Oleander

Nerium oleander - Commonly known as Oleander or Nerium. It is the only species which is currently classified in the genus Nerium, belonging to the family Apocynaceae. In South Asian regions, it’s knows as Kaner.


In ancient content, Oleander is one of the hardy flower plants which can offer a great interior look along with the medicinal benefits. But at the same time, it’s really important to know that all parts of the oleander possess highly-noxious & poisonous substances that can cause serious side effects leading to even death. Hence, it’s highly advisable to avoid taking any of its parts directly and taking proper guidance of an expert, may be a herbalist or physicist to consume it’s extracts. It can cause a burning sensation in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, headache, stomach pain, serious heart problems, and many other side effects.


While we will discuss its benefits in a later part, it’s equally important to know that there have been many cases of poisoning and death due to intake of raw form of any part of oleander, whether it’s oleander leaf tea or its extracts. Even eating honey made from the nectar of its flowers can result in dangerous effects. Oleander is LIKELY UNSAFE when taken by mouth in children or pets also. Consumption while pregnancy and breast-feeding can cause abortion or cause birth defects. Currently, there isn't enough reliable information on whether the oleander is safe for consumption directly for any benefits it consists of. So, to be on a safer side, avoid the use of this pant.

On the other side, Oleander’s extract does miracles in curing censorious diseases. Starting from asthma, heart conditions, epilepsy, cancer, painful menstrual periods, leprosy, malaria, ringworm, indigestion, and venereal disease; and to cause abortions. A fixed combination of oleander leaf powdered extract, pheasant's eye fluid extract, lily-of-the-valley fluid extract, and squill powdered extract has been used for treating mild heart failure. Oleander contains chemicals called glycosides, which can affect the heart. These chemicals can slow the heart rate down. Nowadays, scientists are searching to get more and more health benefits from Oleander. It’s diluted form, but with a help of a physician, can help us in multiple ways listed below:

The correct doses of oleander supplements rely on several factors such as the user's age, health history, and many more. As we know, at the moment there is not enough scientific information or very limited information to determine an appropriate range of doses for oleander. It’s recommended to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using it.
